“The Messenger” is a powerful drama about a war hero making his first steps toward a normal life. Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant has returned home from Iraq and is given a job in what the Army calls “bereavement notification.” He and his partner Captain Tony Stone give notice to the families of fallen soldiers. Stone and Montgomery are not trained to provide counseling or permitted to offer comfort, but instead to relate the facts and circumstances of a soldier’s death. The Sergeant begins getting emotionally involved with a slain soldier’s widow Olivia Pitterson to whom he has delivered news of her husband’s death.
